Sales Management Professional

John Capers is a highly skilled professional with over 30 years of sales and sales management experience in electronic data collection, domestic and international publishing, electronic media,and information industries. 

From his full and rewarding career with Time, Inc., The Chilton Company, to Commonwealth Business Media, and now as the Merion Golf Club’s Historian/ Achivist, John has left his mark. A “member” since birth, John grew up in a competitive family, headed by his mother, an eleven-time Merion Golf Club champion. At twenty-one, a plus two handicape and Captain of the University of the South, Division One golf team, he finally beat his mother (although she did play from the men’s tees).

He graduated from the University of the South and then qualified for the 1966 US Amateur at Merion and the 1968 US Amateur at Scioto. Eighteen Merion Club championships later, Junior, Regular, Senior, and Super-Senior, his passion turned to the preservation of Merion’s History and sharing it with members, guests, and vistors.

Merion is fortunate to be part of the golf’s history and the membership enjoys sharing the course’s and the clubhouses’s treasures with the world. After thirty-two years the United States Golf Association’s National Championship returns to the Merion Golf Club, John Capers will speak on the reason Merion’s East Course was created and its’ evolution during four US Opens.
